Here's a short list of questions that may come up.

1. Only comments for the current year's Yuletide stories count. The story must be part of the official Yuletide or Yuletide Madness collections!

2. Yes, you can comment on stocking stuffers (Yuletide Madness stories) if they are over 1000 words long

3. Although Kudos are lovely, they do not count as a comment (by all means do give kudos if you're so moved).

4. Comments over 200 words are eligible for the 'Love Letter' draw, and they also count as a regular comment.
Example: If a commenter writes 30 regular comments and one love letter comment, their total comment count is 31 - they will have one entry in both the 'Door Prize' and 'Love Letter' draws.

5. Please keep your Love Letters grouped together either at the beginning or the end of your comment list.

6. No concrit please. Some people love it, some people don't, so for now we're just going to leave off on the concrit.

Also, feel free to post any questions, concerns, or suggestions you have here.

This sounds like an awesome thing, wow! ♥ One question:

1. Only comments for the current year's Yuletide stories count. The story must be part of the official yuletide collection!

2. Yes, you can comment on stocking stuffers if they are over 1000 words long

So, you'll count stories belonging to either the Yuletide 2011 or Yuletide Madness 2011 collections, as long as they're over 1000 words?

Yes, exactly! Those two collections, and over 1000 words. I will amend to clarify that - thanks!

Glad you're diggin' the contest. :)

Stories in Madness are by default less than 1000 words, so apparently they don't count.

That's not quite how I remember it working the last couple years. Treats that are under 1000 can *only* be posted to Madness, but plenty of treats are over 1000 words and still posted to Madness. If you look at the Yuletime Madness 2010 collection, you can see that there are lots of longer stories.

Thank you ! I was just going to post that link.

Many Yuletide Madness stories are under 1000 words, but not all of them.

...Wow, this seems like a lot of work for you guys o_O;

Yay? I think it's a great idea, given how much talk I've seen around about how people feel about comments and kudos and things. <3 I always comment psychotically (I seem to have a problem) so perhaps I will enter this. XD Maybe not. I guess we'll see.

Ummm, do we have to separately track Love Letters?

Thanks!

Good question!

Yes, it would be good to have a separate list of Love Letters, even if it's just included at the end of your regular comment count. I'll amend the instructions to clarify. Thank for pointing that out - this contest is a work in progress this year, so it's great to have the input.

Glad to hear you're so enthusiastic about commenting! I know comments always make my day, and they don't take that long to write, so it's a fun, easy way to make someone happy. :)

Could we star them or something, or group them separately, instead of re-listing them?

I know comments always make my day, and they don't take that long to write, so it's a fun, easy way to make someone happy. :)

Some people do not feel this way, I have discovered. o_o; But I'm with you! And I'm a rambler anyway. /o\

Yes, if you just put them in a group at the beginning or the end of your list, that would be perfect! So long as they're together and easy to count.

*tilts head*

You mean, you know someone who *doesn't* like comments?

I can't continue this discussion because I'm overwhelmed by the adorableness of that icon.

Sounds like fun! I was going to comment to as many fics as possible anyway, so I might as well keep track of it ^_^ Though I don't envy all the checking you guys will have to do when the comment lists are in.

Heh, yeah the counting part will be tedious. :/ Hopefully there will be a way to aggregate the numbers automatically in future years.

Bless you, sir. You're helping make the world a better place. X)

Hmm. That's an interesting question that hasn't been considered yet. I will think on it and give a reply tomorrow.

Such a wonderful idea. Comments are so meaningful--and I enjoy having a sort of conversation with authors about what I love in their work. Do I need to do something to sign up?

Yay - I'm so pleased you like the contest.

You don't need to sign up beforehand! All you need to do it submit (post or email) your comment URL list before the end of January 4th (any comments made between Dec 25th and the reveal can be on your list). Further instructions on how to do that are here:

Happy yuletiding!

May I ask why only stories over 1000 words are eligible to be commented on for this contest? *is curious* *also is a writer of short treats averaging 500 words and likes comments as well as anyone else ;P*

For the purposes of the contest, the rule is there to prevent giving an advantage to anyone who might be tempted just to comment on very short stories. :/

Could have sworn this question was addressed earlier but I can't seem to find it for the life of me -- I know that "love letters" are over 200 words, but is there a minimum wordcount for other comments? Mine are generally all lengthy, but from the perspective of a writer I do like to receive more than just a "good job!" or "well done!"

10 words is the minimum for a regular comment - just enough to say one or two nice things. If you write more that's awesome!
